Superpowers? Sign me up!
I’ve seen every superhero movie possible from the Batman classics to the most current Marvel movies. I can’t get enough of these stories of everyday people gaining superpowers that ultimately save the world.
Whatever movies can do, books can do EVEN BETTER. Here’s a list of my favorite YA characters with superpowers. You don’t have to go to the movies to witness some kick-ass scenes of people learning how to best utilize their abilities.
Ethan a.k.a Scam from Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan, and Deborah Biancotti
He’s got a voice inside him that’ll say whatever you want to hear, whether it’s true or not. Which is handy, except when it isn’t—like when the voice starts gabbing in the middle of a bank robbery. Bonus: Zeroes isn’t just about Ethan, the story follows a group of characters with interesting powers just like Ethan’s.
Elena Mendoza from The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson
Elena Mendoza can perform miracles, for example healing others in need. Inanimate objects also start to talk to Elena. As more unbelievable things occur, and Elena continues to perform miracles, the only remaining explanation is the least logical of all—that the world is actually coming to an end, and Elena is possibly the only one who can do something about it.
Mara Dyer from The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Mara’s power is more of a burden but can come in handy when she needs to protect herself. Mara has the power to kill, whether that makes her the hero or the villain is something for the reader to decide.

Maia from Fate of Flames by Sarah Raughley
In the Effigies series, one girl has the power to control each element. Maia was just a normal student until she becomes the next Fire Effigy, meaning she has the power to control fire. Now, the 4 girls just need to save the world.
