If there’s one thing I’m obsessed with, it’s the Dark Artifices series. Yes, I love all the Shadowhunters novels, but the Dark Artifices series is still coming out, which means I’m STILL WONDERING ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN! I’m hanging onto every word that Cassandra Clare says about the series and adding it into my little bundle of knowledge. But it’s come to my attention that not everyone is stalking the internet about this series like I am, which means some people may not know…

…that the next book in the Dark Artifices series is coming out in 2018!

According to Cassandra Clare’s website (and a bunch of other sources because, again, I’m obsessed) the last book, Queen of Air and Darkness, will be released in Autumn of 2018! Now that you know, you can join me in this happy dance:

…Is it Autumn of 2018 yet?

Nothing makes me smile quite as widely as seeing bookstagrams of my favorite covers. I tend to fall down the bookstagram rabbit hole pretty frequently, to be honest, and my latest trip was in thanks to Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman! I fell in love with the cover first, but then I read the book and fell in love with the characters, and that’s basically a recipe for Janine obsession. I scoured Instagram for my favorite bookstagrams (which really takes some dedication because, as you can imagine, #starfish is common and not because of the book). So go ahead and check out the bookstagrams I found that gave me a serious case of the heart eyes!

P.S. If you took a bookstagram and I missed it, tag @SimonTeen or @Riveted and I’ll add them to this roundup!

1. This has everything from ocean waves to frames all of which highlight just how breathtaking the cover is!

4. This makes me happy because there are starfish in the photo since there are none on the cover!

8. Oh did I say food was my favorite thing? I must have temporarily forgotten that PUPPIES EXIST (the puppy makes me forgive that the cover is blurry…we all need our priorities, right?)

Read Possession by M. Verano

PosessionAll her life, Laetitia Jones has only wanted to be a star. It’s more than an ambition—somewhere deep inside, she knows that she was born for greatness.

But her path to stardom now seems to be halted by a mysterious, undiagnosed illness that’s taken over her body. Doctors don’t have a clue and most days, she’s stuck at home documenting her strange symptoms—symptoms that start with fevers and chills, but soon escalate to bizarre bodily reactions.

Laetitia’s only escape from her illness is following the news—and the race riots that are moving closer and closer to her neighborhood. But when horrific visions begin to invade her mind, even the media can’t distract her and she begins to wonder—is her illness something biological…or is it something more? Are the voices she hears and the notes she finds in her own handwriting signs of insanity…or signs of something much more sinister and demonic? Or, perhaps, signs of something benevolent…something holy even.

Laetitia has always known she’d be famous…she just didn’t know it would happen this way.

If you love American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare…

Read The Diary of a Haunting by M. Verano

READ NOW

Following her parents’ high-profile divorce, Paige and her brother are forced to move to Idaho with their mother, and Paige doesn’t have very high hopes for her new life. The small town they’ve moved to is nothing compared to the life she left behind in LA. And the situation is made even worse by the drafty old mansion they’ve rented that’s filled with spiders and plenty of other pests that Paige can’t even bear to imagine.

Pretty soon, strange things start to happen around the house—one can of ravioli becomes a dozen, unreadable words start appearing on the walls, and Paige’s little brother begins roaming the house late at night. And there’s something not right about the downstairs neighbor who seems to know a lot more than he’s letting on.

Things only get creepier when she learns about the cult that conducted experimental rituals in the house almost one hundred years earlier. The more Paige investigates, the clearer it all becomes: there’s something in the house, and whatever it is…and it won’t be backing down without a fight.

We don’t want to start recommending books until the season is officially over, but what do you think would be the perfect book recommendation for AHS: Cult?

I can’t get The Victoria in My Head by Janelle Milanes out of my head (and I’m ok with that)! Victoria is one of the greatest characters I’ve ever had the opportunity to meet in YA and it’s definitely not just because we have so much in common *wink*. I’ve reread this book so many times and there’s only one thing that makes it better- adding music! It’s a book about being in a band, so of course listening to just the right songs makes a world of difference. Luckily, the amazing Janelle Milanes already knew this and made sure to give each chapter the perfect song to accompany it!

I’ve compiled all the songs into a playlist and have pretty much just been listening to it on repeat (and I have no regrets)! Enjoy!

There’s nothing that gets under my skin more than learning that a great book has been banned. In my opinion, the best way to defy the banning of books and show that you don’t approve of censorship is to read the very books that are banned. It’s what I do every Banned Books Week, and now you can, too (without even having to go to go out and buy a book)! Riveted is offering 6 banned books for your free reading pleasure!

As an added challenge, as you read, see if you can figure out why these books were banned

Godless by Pete Hautman

Godless

“Why mess around with Catholicism when you can have your own customized religion?”
Fed up with his parents’ boring old religion, agnostic-going-on-atheist Jason Bock invents a new god — the town’s water tower. He recruits an unlikely group of worshippers: his snail-farming best friend, Shin, cute-as-a-button (whatever that means) Magda Price, and the violent and unpredictable Henry Stagg. As their religion grows, it takes on a life of its own. While Jason struggles to keep the faith pure, Shin obsesses over writing their bible, and the explosive Henry schemes to make the new faith even more exciting — and dangerous.

When the Chutengodians hold their first ceremony high atop the dome of the water tower, things quickly go from merely dangerous to terrifying and deadly. Jason soon realizes that inventing a religion is a lot easier than controlling it, but control it he must, before his creation destroys both his friends and himself.

Tricks by Ellen Hopkins

Tricks

“When all choice is taken from you, life becomes a game of survival.”

Five teenagers from different parts of the country. Three girls. Two guys. Four straight. One gay. Some rich. Some poor. Some from great families. Some with no one at all. All living their lives as best they can, but all searching…for freedom, safety, community, family, love. What they don’t expect, though, is all that can happen when those powerful little words “I love you” are said for all the wrong reasons.

Five moving stories remain separate at first, then interweave to tell a larger, powerful story—a story about making choices, taking leaps of faith, falling down, and growing up. A story about kids figuring out what sex and love are all about, at all costs, while asking themselves, “Can I ever feel okay about myself?”

A brilliant achievement from New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins—who has been called “the bestselling living poet in the country” by Mediabistro.com—Tricks is a book that turns you on and repels you at the same time. Just like so much of life.

If you’re a budding author who loves reading books, you will benefit from reading about some characters who also love to express themselves through the written word. Each of these characters use writing in different ways. Some communicate purely through writing, some only write in lists, some write beautiful prose, and others catalog their daily habits. Whether you’re an aspiring prose author, poet, screenwriter, or you just like getting your thoughts down on paper, these 5 books will help inspire you to reach your full writing potential! After all, there’s nothing as comforting as knowing someone else is going through what you’re going through.

1. Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

autoboyography-9781481481687_hr

Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.

to-all-the-boys-ive-loved-before-9781442426726_hr

Sixteen-year-old Lara Jean Song keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren’t love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she’s written. One for every boy she’s ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean’s love life goes from imaginary to out of control.

3. Thanks for the Trouble by Tommy Wallach

Thanks for the trouble

“Was this story written about me?”
I shrugged.
“Yes or no?”
I shrugged again, finally earning a little scowl, which somehow made the girl even more pretty.
“It’s very rude not to answer simple questions,” she said.
I gestured for my journal, but she still wouldn’t give it to me. So I took out my pen and wrote on my palm.
I can’t, I wrote. Then, in tiny letters below it: Now don’t you feel like a jerk?

4. Me Being Me is Exactly as Strange as You Being You by Todd Hasak-Lowy

me-being-me-is-exactly-as-insane-as-you-being-you-9781442495746_hr

Told entirely in lists, Todd Hasak-Lowy’s debut YA novel perfectly captures why having anything to do with anyone, including yourself, is:

1. painful
2. unavoidable
3. ridiculously complicated
4. possibly, hopefully the right thing after all.

5. Confessions of a High School Disaster by Emma Chastain

Confessions

Mom says the only thing sadder than remembering is forgetting, so I’m going to write down everything that happens to me in this diary. That way, even when I’m ninety, I’ll remember how awkward and horrible and exciting it is to be in high school.

What is a Shadowhunter?

ShadowhuntersShadowhunters (also known as Nephilim) are the appointed warriors on Earth of the Angel Raziel. They are appointed specifically to control and preside over the demons and supernatural creatures that reside in our world. A thousand years ago Raziel bestowed the tools to accomplish this task. These tools are:

  • The Mortal Instruments—used so Shadowhunters may know truth, speak with angels, and make more of their kind
  • The country of Idris—where Shadowhunters live away from demons and the mundane world
  • The Book of Raziel (or “Gray Book”)—used by Shadowhunters to access the magic of angels to protect and augment themselves

Raziel gave these gifts to the first Nephilim, Jonathan Shadowhunter—the Shadowhunter namesake.
