If there’s anything YA has taught me over the years, it’s that teenagers are the ones who have the guts to speak out against oppressors and fight back. They see the injustices in their worlds and know something must be done to change things. In these books for the Resistance, evil governments have all of the power, until a brave group of people dare to fight back.

7 Books for the Resistance

We all know how intense it can be to be a book nerd. From waiting up for midnight releases, counting down the days to movie premieres, and attending conventions, there are times I’m totally willing to let me book nerd flag fly. It’s those times that I love getting dressed up in the most outrageous outfits. But there are other times I want to keep my nerdiness a little more low-key. I tend to be a little more of a subtle nerd, but since I love books so much I’ve taken to finding items I can quietly incorporate into my day to day life. I do this through small bookish accessories and items.

Below are some of my favorite accessories for the low-key book nerd!

Best Fantasy Books

 |
October 27, 2017

Sometimes, I find myself in need of a very specific reading experience. I need to be swept away to a world that will let me forget about my own problems and get me caught up in someone else’s. I need to see a world where the normal rules don’t apply and I can truly immerse myself in the magic of reading. I need something that will let me really flex my imagination. Basically, I need a fantasy book. If you’ve ever found yourself in this particular kind of mood, then you know just how important this is! So, for any time you find yourself saying “I need something different,” here’s my list of best fantasy books!

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Lady Midnight
It’s been five years since the war that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering who killed her parents and avenging her losses. Together with her battle partner Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles. Too bad her heart is leading her right into a forbidden love.

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But Mark has spent the past five years trapped in Faerie; can he ever truly be a Shadowhunter again?

P.S. The ENTIRE SERIES is destined for greatness

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

LastMagician
In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Shimmer and Burn by Mary Taranta

Alys was seven the first time she saw the soul eaters.
These soul eaters are twin sisters who were abandoned by their father and slowly grew into something not quite human. And they feed off of human souls. When her village was attacked, Alys was spared and sent to live in a neighboring village. There the devout people created a strict world where fear of the soul eaters—and of the Beast they believe guides them—rule village life. But the Beast is not what they think he is. And neither is Alys.

The Cursed Queen by Sarah Fine

6 Reasons to Read Starfish

 |
September 27, 2017

Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman is finally here! I’m so excited to share this one with you guys because it’s one of my favorite contemporary young adult novels of the year! When I first read it, I couldn’t believe how much I connected to the characters and this story. Everyone should read it, but don’t just take me at my word. Below are six solid reasons why you should pick up Starfish!

1. The characters

I love character driven books, which is why I fell in love with Starfish! The characters are amazing and complex. They grabbed my heart from the first page and did not let go.

2. Kiko is a strong female character

Kiko has a lot of setbacks she has to deal with, including rejection from her dream art school. Though her journey is not always easy, it’s amazing to watch her overcome what is thrown at her. You’ll quickly become one of her biggest cheerleaders.

3. A beautiful cover

Starfish
This cover takes my breath away. It is so fitting for the breathtaking story of this book!

4. A focus on art

Kiko’s dream is to get into Prism, her dream art school. Though she doesn’t get in, I love the way they focus on Kiko’s art. The descriptions of her artwork also help to give perspective on how Kiko is feeling in the book.

5. An intimate look at anxiety

Kiko has anxiety and the book does not shy away from it. I love the visceral way you feel how she is feeling. Those living with an anxiety disorder might be able to find something of themselves in Kiko’s experience, and those without will be able to understand what it means.

6. A debut author to watch

Akemi Dawn Bowman is an author you definitely want to keep your eye on! I know that I will be picking up pretty much anything she writes from now on. If you want to fall in love with a new author, begin with this fantastic debut novel!
