So you’ve probably heard already that as of last week, Cassandra Clare’s beloved City of Bones is ten years old, right? And you’ve probably seen that we’re currently featuring it as a free read here on Riveted until April 10, right?

What you may NOT have known though is……there is a super special 10th ANNIVERSARY EDITION coming out this fall!

That’s right, the deluxe hardcover 10th Anniversary Edition of City of Bones will be hitting bookstores everywhere on November 7 and it’s going to be glorious! Now, we don’t know what it will look like just yet since the cover hasn’t been revealed (stay tuned, though—the second it’s out there, we’ll let you know!) but we DO have a good idea of what it’s going to include! Some of these details could very well change between now and when the book comes out, but here’s what we know so far:

  • It will feature new cover art! (We have no idea what it’s going to look like but we’re hoping for something elegant and old school like a book right out of the Shadowhunter library!)
  • It will have gilded edges! (You KNOW a book is deluxe when it has gold edges!)
  • It will include over THIRTY black & white interior illustrations throughout!  (We vote for more Malec art!!)
  • It will include SIX new full-page color portraits of our favorite characters! (Who wouldn’t want new eye candy?!)
  • It will include FOUR bonus stories (These will probably be the various bonus stories Cassandra Clare has written in the past for other special editions but we’re looking forward to having them all together in one convenient place!)
  • It will include NEW CONTENT written by Cassandra Clare (We can only daydream about the possibilities: Will it be letter to fans?  Will it be a secret Shadowhunter recipe? Will Cassandra do what she does best and come up with something completely new and mind-blowing that we couldn’t even guess right now?)

Between the original hardcover, the paperback, the movie tie-in edition, and the NEW paperback, most of us here at Riveted already proudly display several copies of City of Bones on our shelves, but that does NOTHING to diminish our excitement over acquiring this new version! If you’re in the same boat, you can already pre-order this new edition from a few retailers, you’ll find those links here!

Until then, please join us in re-reading the Mortal Instruments series, coloring in our Mortal instruments coloring book, and daydreaming about the Shadowhunter world. Because we’re definitely not obsessed.

This fall, fans worldwide will be devastated when Richard Paul Evans’ bestselling Michael Vey series comes to an end with the as-yet-unnamed seventh and final book in the series. During the peak of dystopian YA, Evans observed that the genre was flooded with dark and hostile themes and set out to write a series focused on hope, loyalty, and courage. Evans’ series about a fourteen-year-old with mysterious electric powers and Tourette’s syndrome (like Evans himself) hit the mark, resonating with teens and adults alike, and growing considerably from book to book. If you’re not already a “Veyniac” yourself, see what you’re missing out on—we’re featuring the first book in a series as one of our featured reads from now until April 17!

With the series coming to a close, Evans has launched the Michael Vey Commercial Contest, in which fans are invited to create and post a Michael Vey commercial on YouTube for the chance to win a slew of prizes, including the opportunity to win a lunch with Evans himself! If you’re interested in entering (perhaps after reading Michael Vey here on Riveted), you’ll find all of the details here on Evans’s blog. The contest wraps on April 16 so you’ll need to get moving!

There have been some AMAZING entries so far, it’s really evident how much this series has meant to kids! We rounded up a few of our favorites, though to be honest, it was hard to pick a favorite. We’re glad we’re not the ones responsible for choosing a winner! Take a look and see what you think. And if you’re inspired to enter, be sure to leave a link to your entry in the comments on this post so we can take a look!

Happy Monday!

This week on Riveted, whatever you’re in the mood—romance, contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi—we’ve got you covered! First up, we’re featuring an extended excerpt of Alex, Approximately, the new YA novel from Jenn Bennett on sale tomorrow (4/4)! In this teen spin on You’ve Got Mail, Bailey Rydell comes to realize that the one guy she can’t stand is actually the boy of her dreams. You may recall Alex, Approximately from last June when we held a poll for fans to vote on one of two cover options as part of Barnes & Noble’s B-Fest (you can still see the two cover options here — in hindsight, we’re glad the vote turned out the way it did).

We’ve also got extended excerpts of two great contemporary YA novels coming out in paperback this week! From Morgan Matson, we have The Unexpected Everything, a story of friendship, finding yourself, and all the joys of life that happen while you’re busy making other plans; and from Deb Caletti, we have Essential Maps for the Lost, about the grief that can tear us apart and the people who can make us whole again. Actually, we have a double-dose of Deb Caletti, because in addition to the extended excerpt of Essential Maps for the Lost, we’re ALSO featuring a full read of Deb’s The Last Forever, her bittersweet novel about first love and loss.

For a bit of a change of pace, this week we’re also featuring a full read of the first book in Richard Paul Evans’s Michael Vey series, Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25! This action-packed book series following Michael Vey—a fourteen-year-old who has Tourette’s syndrome…and electric powers—will be coming to a conclusion this September with the as-yet-unnamed seventh and final book. Over the course of the series, Richard Paul Evans has been building up a legion of fans so if you’re not familiar with the name Michael Vey, now might be a good to time to get acquainted!

Finally, we’ve brought out another Riveted favorite as a featured full read: Zombies Vs. Unicorns! This anthology of short stories explores the question, “which is better, the zombie or the unicorn?” and features a slew of amazing and well-known YA authors (Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, and Scott Westerfeld, to name a few) making arguments for both sides in a series of spectacular short stories.

Of course, those are only the reads that are NEW for this week, we STILL have last week’s reads available for a few more days! From Emma Harrison, we have a full read of Escaping Perfect and an extended excerpt of Finding What’s Real; from Cassandra Clare, we have a full read of City of Bones, in honor of it’s recent ten-year anniversary; and from Lisa M. Stasse, we have a full read of The Forsaken, the first book in her dystopian Forsaken trilogy.

It’s a Buffy Renaissance! Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the world-changing TV show that recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, just keeps getting more and more relevant. The show is available to watch on various streaming services, a new clothing line is coming out, and just a couple of weeks ago we announced a new official watcher’s guide. But the news just keeps getting better: yesterday, EW.com revealed that a BRAND NEW Buffy the Vampire Slayer book series is in the works!

Per EW:

Simon & Schuster’s teen division, Simon Pulse, will publish a new spinoff series of the cult classic television show that will be written by New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White. The series, which will be published in the fall of 2018, will be titled SLAYER and will feature a brand new slayer from the group of potentials that Willow used her Wicca skills to awaken in the show’s final episode.

Sweet, right?! Details are still scarce at this point but we pestered the editor for more info! Here’s what we can share that EW DIDN’T mention: This slayer will face a brand new “Big Bad,” and she will also be deeply affected by the major events involving Willow’s magic that have occurred in Season 8 and beyond in the Buffy comics. Additionally, her personal history has deep ties to the rich history of the Buffyverse and we’ll gain new insight into the world of the watchers.

We’re super excited that Kiersten White will be writing these new books since And I Darken has been a favorite of ours (and the world) for a while now. If this new heroine is as badass as Lada, we’re definitely in for a real treat! Plus, we’re confident that she’s going to do true justice to the series thanks to this heartfelt quote from the article:

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s influence on my own writing can’t be underestimated…When my agent asked if I was interested, I basically said, ‘Every book I’ve ever written was an audition for this.’ It’s still stunning to me that I get to contribute to a world that has been part of my imagination for more than half my life. Dreaming up my own slayer is one of the most surreal experiences of my career so far. I’m so excited to share her with diehard Scoobies and new fans alike!”

Are you as excited for this series as we are?! Let us know in the comments!!

Emma Chastain, debut author of Confessions of a High School Disaster, has been busy! With Confessions having just come out earlier this month, she’s been making the rounds online, fielding interviews and Q&A’s, while her book toured the blogosphere for two weeks. Being fans of Chloe Snow and Confessions, we’re not ashamed to admit we’ve been stalking Emma online a bit as of late, keeping tabs on what’s she been up to. If you’re as into Confessions of a High School Disaster as we are, here are a few excerpts of some of our favorite coverage lately that you might have missed. And if you’re not a fan, it’s probably because you haven’t read the extended excerpt we’ve been featuring here on Riveted for the last few weeks and you’re missing out! It’s still available, but only until April 3 so read it now while you can!

Confessions

From JustineMagazine.com’s Confessions of a High School Disaster Author Emma Chastain Spills on Chloe Snow, Gossip and Guys:

Who did you write Confessions of a High School Disaster for?

Bookish high school kids who feel like weirdos, and adults who used to be bookish, weird high school kids.

Chloe loves to make lists of potential boyfriends, some hilariously inappropriate. Who is your favorite fictional boyfriend and why?

No contest: Laurie Laurence in Little Women. I’m still not over the fact that Jo chose Professor Bhaer, who probably has old-man breath, over her fun and sexy soulmate.

Haha! OK, that’s all we needed to hear. Now we know why we loved the way Chloe wrote about what she was reading so much. We totally want to be in a book club with both of you! So spill…what was your favorite book in high school and why?

I was obsessed with Middlemarch, which I originally picked up because I was a pretentious show-off—I wanted to carry the book around with the cover facing out, to show the world how brilliant I was—but which I then fell in love with, because it is such a humane, funny, wrenching novel. I reread it this year, and I see all the characters differently now than I did when I was 18. I’m sure they’ll change and change again as I age; it’s the kind of book that grows with you.

From SparkNotes.com’s Emma Chastain On Her Debut Novel, Confessions of a High School Disaster:

“If only I could see into the future, I could relax and enjoy being a bachelorette.” This was one of my favorite Chloe quotes in the whole book. Can you speak to it a little more, in terms of advice to high schoolers?

I wish I’d enjoyed my teens and twenties more. It should have been fun, dating various inappropriate people and dealing with dramas of my own creation, but I could never stop and appreciate my youth and freedom because I was so busy panicking about dying alone. I worried about that in high school! I wanted every single dude I dated to fall desperately in love with me, even the ones I wasn’t too interested in myself. WHY? I knew I wasn’t going to marry any of these guys! I’m the last person who should be doling out advice, but I guess I’d say, if you’re someone who wants to get married, you’ll almost certainly get married, so try to put it out of your mind, especially in high school. You’re not going to turn into Miss Havisham. You’re beautiful and cute and interesting, and so many people are going to love you. Also, don’t waste one iota of energy or thought on someone who’s not nice to you. (I must have spent ten years of my life trying to get guys who didn’t even like me to like me back. Again: WHY?!?) It sounds so obvious, but when you’re feeling sick with love and uncertainty about someone, ask yourself, “Is this person nice to me?” and if the answer is no, well, that’s your answer.

Early on, Chloe notes that she likes doing things by herself because it’s easier to observe the world when you’re not trying to keep a conversation going (I love that she’s independent/comfortable with herself in this way.) Later, Chloe also talks about being addicted to her phone, a feeling to which most of us can relate. What would you say is your/Chloe’s message to high schoolers about reconciling personal independence with dependence on social media?

We should probably all throw our phones in the garbage. I love mine, of course, because I love taking pictures with it, and I love listening to podcasts on it. And my brain thinks it loves social media, but in fact I almost never feel anything but stressed out and upset after looking at Twitter or Facebook. After Chloe gets slut-shamed online, she deletes all of her accounts, which is something I wish I could bring myself to do. I don’t think Chloe realizes this explicitly, but I do think it’s good to try to be alone in the world sometimes without resorting to your phone. It can feel deeply awkward to sit by yourself in a room or cafe or park or wherever, looking around instead of into the internet, but in fact it’s not awkward, because despite what you fear, no one is judging you or wondering what you’re doing sitting there by yourself. And if you happen to want to be a writer, observing the real world, and the real people in it, is an essential task, and one I’m going to get around to as soon as I pick the right Instagram filter for this photo of my nails.

From AdventuresinYAPublishing.com’s Emma Chastain, author of CONFESSIONS OF A HIGH SCHOOL DISASTER, on working twenty minutes a day:

Was there an AHA! moment along your road to publication where something suddenly sank in and you felt you had the key to writing a novel? What was it?

Remember when Pa Ingalls tied a rope from the house to the barn so he and Ma wouldn’t lose their bearings, wander off into the raging blizzard, and freeze to death? For me, an outline is like that rope. I never wrote one before taking a class with Ha Jin, who required his students to try it, and it turned out to be the thing that keeps me from expiring in the snow.

What’s your writing ritual like? Do you listen to music? Work at home or at a coffee shop or the library, etc?

I work at home, on my laptop, in a Google doc. I sit either at the kitchen counter or on the couch. While I’m writing, I don’t allow myself to get up, eat, open new tabs, look at my phone, listen to music, or talk to anyone. I let myself stare at the trees in my backyard occasionally, but I try to keep even that to a minimum.

And just because we got a kick out of it, here’s a funny post from Emma Chastain on Facebook:

Two delightful facts about the German translation of my book:

1. The character’s name will be CALLIE Snow, because apparently “Chloe” sounds exactly like the German word for toilet, and
2. The subtitle is “Highschool mit Hindernissen,” which means “High School with Obstacles”

Happy Monday!

Today’s a special day: it’s the TENTH anniversary of Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones! Who knew back then that in ten years, City of Bones would have gone on to spawn a movie, a television series, and multiple book series with over 50 MILLION copies in print worldwide! Congratulations, Cassandra Clare! So in honor of this auspicious day, we’re delighted to feature City of Bones as a featured free read once again!

Of course, we’ve got a few other reads for you this week as well! We have a full read of Emma Harrison’s Escaping Perfect, in which Cecelia Montgomery, the daughter of a high-profile political figure, runs away from her constricting past to live the normal life she’s always dreamed of. Finding What’s Real, the sequel to Escaping Perfect, goes on sale this week (3/28)….and we’ve got an extended excerpt of that for you as well! See what happens when Cecelia Montgomery returns after running away to deal with the downside of her newfound fame—and her mother’s Presidential campaign.

We’ve also got a full read of The Forsaken, the first book in Lisa M. Stasse’s The Forsaken Trilogy about a dystopian future world where sixteen-year-olds are often imprisoned proactively based on a standardized test to gauge their capacity for violence. EntertainmentWeekly.com called this fascinating read “a fast-paced novel [that] you’ll get sucked into. You just can’t seem to put [it] down.” If you missed this series five years ago when it was first published, now is a great time to discover it!

And as always, we still have last week’s reads available for a few more days! We’re keeping Emma Chastain’s YA-novel-in-the-spirit-of-Bridget-Jones’s-Diary Confessions of a High School Disaster available for one more bonus week so definitely check it out if you haven’t yet! We’ve also got two from Tom Leveen: an extended excerpt of his latest YA, the creepy and suspenseful adventure, Hellworld, and a full read of his tense and gripping exploration of cyberbullying and teen suicide, Random. We’ve also got an extended excerpt of Belle, Cameron Dokey’s retelling of the tale of the Beauty and the Beast, and we’ve got a full read of The Storyspinner, the first book in Becky Wallace’s fantasy series, The Keepers’ Chronicles.
