I love the ocean. It is beautiful. Going to the beach, heck ya! Going deeper than say, my waist in the water? No thank you. The ocean may be beautiful, but there is no telling what may lurk under those mysterious blue waters, and I do not want to find out the hard way. These books are just further proof that I should stay where I belong—on the shore, reading about the ocean.

Books That Prove That the Ocean is a Scary Place

1. Songs From the Deep by Kelly Powell

If you fear being dragged under, this book will test the limits of your courage. As much death and destruction on land as there is in the water, this book takes place in an oceanside town known for the sirens that lurk just near the surface—luring in whoever comes close enough.

2. Blackhearts by Nicole Castroman

Blackhearts is a passionate retelling of the tale of Blackbeard, full of romance and adventure. But the open sea can be extremely dangerous—and pirates like Teach Drummond, later known as the famous Blackbeard, are determined to make sure that stays true.

3. The Coming Storm by Regina M. Hansen

A legend of a sea monster looms on the beautiful Prince Edward Island, where Beet and Gerry live. When a mysterious woman comes to town and things start to go sideways, you won’t need much more proof of the terror that is the ocean.

4. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

Yet another example of the fact that what lurks beneath may try and kill you!! The ghosts of three sisters drowned for witchcraft haunt a town in this eerie novel, luring boys to their watery deaths every year. Don’t look too closely into the depths—you may just get dragged down into them.

5. Tithe by Holly Black

In this dark and enthralling take on classic faerie tales, we follow changeling Kaye as she discovers her powers and faces a great evil. In this book, the dark power of the ocean at play is a kelpie who Kaye befriends to learn magic. Kelpies are shapeshifters that live in or out of the sea—we’re not even safe on land. No one go near the shore.

6. A Rush of Wings by Laura E. Weymouth

This one is really going to get you—our leading lady Rowena loses her mother in a tragic accident, only to have her mysteriously return from the sea after Rowena rescues a man named Gawen from a shipwreck. But her mother is not at all the same now that she has returned, and nothing but Rowena’s hidden power can stop her.

7. I Killed Zoe Spanos by Kit Frick

Murder in the Hamptons is the bottom line in this intense, twisty thriller. A body washes up in a nearby lake, an unreliable narrator confesses to the crime, and a local podcast host is determined to uncover the truth. I don’t know about you, but all I needed to hear was “body pulled out of water” to prove my point.

8. In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens

More pirates. See? The ocean is scary! In this high-stakes adventure novel set on the high seas, there’s magic, mystery, action, and of course, scary seas. It’s everything you could want in an adventure-romance, and every reason never to get on a ship again.

9. Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

While this may be a fantasy ocean, filled with mythical beasts and evil ship captains, I still would not want to run into this ship or this sea on a trip. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the risk to assume that beasts and sea creatures from fantasy don’t exist—for all we know, the flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey from this tale could easily be out there!

10. Start Here by Trish Doller

Smaller than a pirate ship, can you imagine sailing from Ohio to Key West? That’s a long journey in a small boat, and like we’ve already learned, the ocean is a scary place…this could go wrong in so many ways, but add the emotional turmoil of grief and loss plus drama stirring between friends, and you’ve got one crazy sea-bound adventure.

Dynamic Duos in YA Books That Will Capture Your Heart

Sebastian Stan Hug GIF by Disney+ - Find & Share on GIPHY

1. Kat and Stevie from Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson

A duo wouldn’t be dynamic if the pair had too much in common—take these two best friends who are totally different, and follow them as they gallivant around Manhattan, undergoing disaster after disaster, putting their bond to the test at every turn.

2. Jace and Alec from City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

You could call any parabatai a dynamic duo, but Jace and Alec were the first that we met in the Shadowhunters world, and they’re a duo that can’t be beat. No matter what is thrown their way, they always, ALWAYS have each other’s backs—the OG Shadowhunters bromance.

3. Veronyka and her phoenix from Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto

A Phoenix Rider and her phoenix? Of course it’s a dynamic duo. Many long-standing fan favorite dynamic duos are heroes and their animal side-kicks. Veronyka and her phoenix are no exception to that rule.

4. Bree and Alice from Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Bree and Alice are the definition of “girl gang.” Long-time best friends, Alice stands by Bree while she goes through the emotionally strenuous events of this enthralling read. It may be a rocky road, but these girls know how to stick together.

5. June and Jayne from Yolk by Mary H. K. Choi

June and Jayne are a sister duo unlike any other, so naturally they made the list. They go through a lot together over the course of this book, but it only serves to bring them closer. Rain or shine, they’ll always have each other!

6. Rowan and Neil from Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Rowan and Neil aren’t your typical dynamic duo—their camaraderie is built on rivalry. After years spent going to head-to-head in every school position, class, and organization, the two pair up for the senior day games and discover that they work much better together than against each other.

7. Bao and Viet from A Pho Love Story by Loan Le

If you love reading about realistic and supportive friendships, you’ll love Bao and Viet. Bao and Viet have a pure and beautiful bromance, one that’ll tug at your heartstrings for sure.

8. Benedict and Marshall from These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Benedict and Marshall are, as Roma lovingly states, as likely to kill each other as they are to kiss each other. These two bicker and fight like nobody’s business, but the love and care for each other too. It’s a dynamic duo of the highest order—dynamic in friendship and in love.

9. Rowan and Citra from Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Rowan and Citra are brought together by a terrible fate—one they may not be able to overcome. Still, the two always have each other’s backs, and they are willing to take on every seemingly impossible obstacle to keep each other safe and help each other achieve their goals. If that’s not a dynamic duo, I don’t know what is.

10. Nathaniel and Silas from Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Another unconventional pair—you’d never think to enjoy a friendship between a demon and his sorcerer master, but you’ll enjoy this one. The politics of this world are complicated, but this dynamic duo always manages to navigate together, no matter the odds.

Dua Lipa has taken the world by storm with her latest album, not that she wasn’t a force to be reckoned with before. If you love all things Dua Lipa, you’ll love these books!

Books to Read if You Love Dua Lipa

1. Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

Dua’s latest album has a heavy focus on the light and casual side of dating. If you’re vibing with the happy, chill songs on Future Nostalgia, you’ll love this charming, romantic, and uplifting romance that’s as good as any feel-good romcom on TV. It’ll have you Levitating with Dua Lipa and Dababy.

2. Cursed by Thomas Wheeler and Frank Miller

Dua has also taken to inspiring us with girl power songs like Boys Will Be Boys and We’re Good. We’re all for a strong female lead—and Nimue isn’t just strong, she’s independent. Read this new take on the King Arthur tale for a full cast of powerful women, with Nimue in the lead.

3. Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

The on-again-off-again, friends-to-lovers trope we all know and love takes on a poignant and steamy new life in this incredible read by Jenn Bennett. If you’ve had Un Día on repeat, I’m telling you, this one’s for you. Long estranged best friends being forced back together on a camping trip can only go so well—you’ll have to read it to see just how much trouble they find.

4. To All the Boys I’ve Love Before by Jenny Han

An ode to all things owning your crush and getting over the boys who hardly noticed you, this adorable and relatable start to Jenny Han’s To All the Boys series will gave you MAJOR Don’t Start Now vibes in the best possible way. 5. The Sky Blues by Robbie Couch

Mixed feelings about falling in love? Loving Dua’s Love Again? Struggling with the reality that love is hard but looking for hope? Look no further, this book is for you. This sweet, unique, and emotionally available read from Robbie Couch is the perfect place to find a heartfelt story of the struggles of navigating relationships, and is sure to fill you with hope for a happy ending. You’ll be singing Love Again to the pages by the end!

6. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Three words. Enemies to Lovers. You know you want it, and this book has got it. Break My Heart is easily one of my favorite Dua tracks, and it oozes enemies-to-lovers trope. This unique and heart-poundingly thrilling book is a Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920’s China, and it’ll have you scream singing Break My Heart while you tightly cross your fingers that it’s more of a departure from the source tale than others have been.

7. We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This by Rachel Lynn Solomon

This charming novel follows a girl who has just confessed her feelings to her crush, and he ghosts her. But then they just keep running into each other…Whether or not you believe in fate, it makes for a really charming YA Romance, and gives us serious If it Ain’t Me vibes.

8. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Dua’s That Kind of Woman radiates girl power. The lead of that song is a go-getter, a fierce heroine, a strong and confident type. So is Bree, leading lady in Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn. If you’re a fan of reads where women take charge, you will absolutely love Bree. She’s taking the Legendborn by storm—and you won’t want to miss it.

9. Shatter the Sky by Rebecca Kim Wells

Continuing with the trend of strong women, which seems to have been the theme of Future Nostalgia, an album with a title track that literally includes the line “I know you’re not used to a female alpha,” we have yet another strong female lead for you. This rich fantasy world has been dubbed the “Lesbian Dragon Book” by adoring readers online. If that’s not enough to sell you on it, well, just read it anyway. Trust me.

10. When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey

Last but not least, I invoke Dua’s most savage track on the Moonlight edition of Future Nostalgia, a bop called Not My Problem. This book screams Not My Problem as though it were screaming through a megaphone at the top of its lungs into another rmicrophone that’s hooked up to a crazy set of speakers. The opening scene in the books is enough proof of this—but the rest of the book, all about a tight girl gang of witches, is just as good.

Round out this list with a thorough listen of all Dua Lipa’s music, just because if you’ve made it this far, you clearly love her as much as I do. Stay Levitating dababy’s.

Traditional heroes inspire us to be our best selves, but anti-heroes let us ask the question: what if we weren’t? What decisions might a protagonist make if they were led by darker motivations like greed or revenge or power? It’s no wonder we’re enthralled by anti-heroes, and lucky for us, YA is filled with excellent morally grey protagonists who may—or may not—be redeemed in the end.

Anti-Heroes That You’ll Find Yourself Rooting For

Tom Hiddleston Disney GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

1. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Sorcery of Thorns fans agree on one thing—Silas, the snarky demon with a secret heart of gold, is an absolute legend. He’s bound to the magician Nathaniel, which means that he is sustained by Nathaniel’s life force in exchange for providing Nathaniel with magic. Nathaniel consented to this arrangement as a boy, and against all odds, Silas and Nathaniel have a close and loving friendship. Silas usually takes the form of a white cat, and you don’t want to stick around when he unleashes his true form.

2. A Sweet & Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley

Tamsin is a witch, and she provides helpful spells and potions for her fellow villagers. The catch? The only currency she accepts is the villagers’ love for their friends, partners, parents, and even their own children. That love allows Tamsin to feel something for a fleeting period of time before her world turns flat and grey again. It’s hard to imagine a character like this would be anything other than a villain, but a quest with the sweet Wren by her side just might lead to some relief from the sinister cycle in which she’s found herself. In short, Tamsin is the grumpy one who is soft for the sunshine one.

3. The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

Nemesis is not your average heroine. She was created for one purpose only: to be a perfect bodyguard for a galactic senator’s daughter and, if necessary, kill for her without hesitation. Raised to be aggressive, ruthless, and menacing to everyone except her charge, Nemesis thinks she is prepared for anything. Until she has to switch places with the senator’s daughter and masquerade in her likeness amongst corrupt politicians. One wrong move could reveal her true vicious nature—but Nemesis is starting to believe there might be more humanity in her than anyone ever expected.

4. Night Shine by Tessa Gratton

The characters in Night Shine make choices that best fit their goals at the time, but they are not always choices that one would call “good” or “right.” Nothing, an orphan girl who lives in the palace, sets out on a quest to save her close friend the prince from The Sorceress Who Eats Girls—a sorceress who has her own POV chapters and love story arc. If you like your heroes magical, mythical, and morally grey, you have found your next read.

5. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Roma Montagov and Juliette Cai are heirs of rival gangs in 1926 Shanghai, and you can’t get much more anti-hero than organized crime lord. Juliette in particular is a refreshing departure from a traditional heroine—she’s prickly, aloof, and merciless, and we love her for it. But while the Scarlet Gang and the White Flowers scheme for control of Shanghai, a greater, more monstrous threat looms over all of them. When Roma and Juliette are forced to work together, they will have to put aside their complicated past and cooperate for once. Easier said than done for two hardened gangsters. Kaz Brekker who?

6. Scythe by Neal Shusterman

This entire series is focused on anti-heroes being anti-heroes for and against each other. Citra and Rowan join the order of the Scythes, a group of people tasked with administering death in this futuristic reality in which aging is optional. They are supposed to be the most morally upstanding people of all, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Not to mention, Scythe Lucifer is the ultimate anti-hero that you’ll root for even as he makes some morally grey choices. This series does the anti-hero trope like nothing you’ve ever read—you won’t be able to put it down!

7. Cursed by Thomas Wheeler and Frank Miller

This retelling of the King Arthur legend features a strong female lead. It’s hard to say whether Nimue or the sword itself is the real anti-hero of this story—but either way, you won’t be able to root against them. Nimue is inspiring, passionate, and filled with compassion. Her determination to save her people gets her into some trouble, but you just know her heart is in the right place.

8. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

In this enthralling novel, you’ll meet Bree and Nick, two teens hoping to uncover dark secrets by infiltrating the society of Legendborn, who are descendants of King Arthur’s knights. Where Nick, at first glance, is the classic golden-boy hero, his foil is Selwyn, the mysterious Merlin who doesn’t seem to like Bree’s presence, especially where Nick is involved. However, as you read this book, it’ll be almost impossible for you to NOT root for Sel, who gives off some serious Loki vibes.
