1. The cover

City of bones 10th anniversary edition
Have you seen this cover? It’s breathtaking! Not only do the illustrations look awesome, the cover is cloth-over-board with foil for the text and art. Trust me, it looks even better in your hands than it does on your screen.

2. It will look amazing on your shelf

Shelfie
Not only is the cover amazing, but the whole package is! With its gilded edges, you will want this sitting on your shelf next to your other deluxe editions. It looks like something you would find on the shelf of an institute library

3. To complete your collection

The Mortal Instruments
My shelf would not be complete without every Shadowhunter book! I have them all up until now, so this buy is honestly a no brainer.

4. Bonus content

BONUS_Stempel
This edition includes four bonus stories that have previously only appeared in limited distribution, and a new piece written by Cassandra Clare. You NEED to read them, and the only way to do that is to pick up this edition!

The book is filled with black-and-white illustrations throughout! It’s a brand new way to experience reading City of Bones.

7. To celebrate ten years of Shadowhunters

10 years
We all love the Shadowhunter world that Cassandra Clare has created, so let’s celebrate! After so many books, the perfect way to toast to this series is to nab this collector’s edition.

8. It’s a great time to re-read the series

keep calm and reread
Whether you read City of Bones when it first came out ten years ago or only had the chance to recently, this is a book that’s so fun to be read again and again. Every time I do, I find new connections and tidbits I had missed before. What better time to start the series than with this gorgeous edition.

9. To get a friend hooked

gift
Do you have a friend you’ve been nagging to read this book? Been waiting for the perfect time to introduce the Shadowhunter fandom to someone? Well, this edition is perfect for that! It’s a beautiful gift anyone will enjoy getting, so make sure you stock up for birthdays, holidays, or just a regular day you want to make special by giving someone a gift!

10. Because it’s a Cassandra Clare book

Cassandra Clare
Honestly, you should buy any book this woman releases. I love Cassandra Clare and know my shelves will not be complete without any book she releases.

Judging books by the cover is my favorite thing to do! I know everyone tells us we’re not supposed to do it, but it’s just so fun! Nothing will make me pick up a book like a good cover, and Zero Repeat Forever by G.S. Prendergast has a seriously amazing one. You have to check this one out in person, because the picture you see online really pales in comparison to the real thing.

ZeroRepeatForever

1. The first thing I notice is it’s SO SHINY. The black background is matte with shiny accents, making those bits really pop.

2. I’m trying to figure out the image in the middle and I think I’ve settled on the fact that it’s a dandelion in an orb being overtaken by some silver goo. (Any other intepretations?)

3. The title is absolutely gorgeous! I love the use of the arrows in it. It’s super subtle, which makes it even better.

4. Turning it over, the spine is definitely my favorite part. It’s also so shiny, but also cool and geometric looking. This will look AMAZING on bookshelves.

5. On the back, there’s a small excerpt, which is also being overtaken by silver goo. I wonder if this silver goo has any sort of significance?

6. The excerpt is only four sentences, but OH MY GOD now I want to read this book. It sounds like there’s a romance and I’m all for that.

7. I love running my hands over this matte cover. It feels so soft.

8. Now opening the book to read the inside flap, there’s more shiny! (I’m sensing a theme here).

9. And then when you take the dust jacket off to look at the spine, there’s even more shiny.

10…I’m going to go home and read this right now!

Guys, I’m so excited because the third book in the Field Party series, After the Game, is finally here! I’m such a big Abbi Glines fan that I knew even before opening this book that I would love it. Still, I was blown away by how much I fell in love with this story and the romance between Riley and Brady. If you haven’t read this series yet, what have you been doing with your life? Below are 5 reasons you should pick this book up right now (and don’t worry—the books are standalone so you can start with After the Game!):

1. The romance

If there is one thing Abbi Glines is good at, it is writing romance and After the Game is no exception. The romance between Riley and Brady is seriously both spicy and sweet—basically everything you want in a romance.

2. The Southern charm

In After the Game, Abbi Glines perfectly captures that feeling of a small town in Alabama. Calling any fans of Heart of Dixie because you will seriously fall in love with this book. Complete with football games and pick-up trucks, this series brings on the southern charm.

3. Amazing characters

Riley and Brady are both fantastic and loveable characters, but Riley is no doubt my favorite. She is strong and independent—someone who has the courage to overcome the town that turned its back on her and raise her daughter as best she can.

4. Third book in the Field Party series

field party series
Though this book stands alone, it is part of the Field Party series. This book will allow us to return to Lawton Alabama and see the familiar faces (and couples) that we’ve grown to love. You can read the first book in the series, Until Friday Night, for free through September 4th!

5. It’s a book by Abbi Glines

If you haven’t ever read a book by Abbi Glines, now is the time to jump right in with this book! Then you can go back and check out her other books, like the Sea Breeze and the Vincent Boys series.

The Rattled Bones by S.M. Parker

I fell into a pretty bad reading slump a while back. You know what I’m talking about: it’s that feeling of not being able to find anything that really grabs your interest, even as you have a TBR pile a mile high to read. It was a particularly hard time for me because I’m someone who usually finishes a few books a week, so it’s rare for me to go too long without falling in love with a new book. But then someone presented me with a copy of The Rattled Bones by S.M. Parker and in that moment I knew this was just the book I needed. I was instantly swept up into this hauntingly beautiful ghost story and now that I’ve finished it, I have this need to TELL THE WORLD ABOUT IT! So below are my top five reasons why you should pick up The Rattled Bones RIGHT NOW:

1. A ghostly tale

I’m a sucker for a good ghost story and this book has one. Local lore tells of a girl who haunts the Maine coast where Rilla lives. She soon finds herself haunted by this girl and her ghostly songs.

2. Feminist themes

There is no doubt that Rilla is a strong female character. After her father’s death, Rilla takes over her father’s lobster fishing boat—how cool is that?! I absolutely loved the way she embodies the feminist themes I enjoy seeing in books.

3. Atmospheric Maine setting

The setting is fantastic for this gorgeous ghost story. Maine’s coast is beautiful, but also can become eerie. The way S.M. Parker writes this setting will have readers not only enthralled, but also creeped out in the beat way.

4. Gorgeous cover

TheRattledBones

Because I always judge a book by its cover, it’s important to me that they have a good one. And this one is absolutely stunning. The image of the girl sinking below the water hints at the eeriness of the story.

5. An intriguing mystery

When she becomes haunted by the ghost of a girl who died tragically, Rilla must figure out what happened to her. This leads her to Sam, an archeology student who is entrenched in the mystery as well. Together they must uncover the shocking past of their town. This mystery kept me on my toes until the end and I loved every second of it.

It has been over 3 months since Lord of Shadows, the second book in the Dark Artifices series, released, and I am STILL thinking about this series. I want everyone to know about it and love it as much as I do. So if you’ve read my first list of Reasons to Read Lady Midnight and are still on the fence, I’ve put together a second list of reasons why you should check out Lady Midnight!

1. A new Institute

One of the most fascinating things about this world is the system of Institutes (basically Shadowhunter HQs). We were in New York City in the Mortal Instruments series and London in the Infernal Devices, but Lady Midnight introduces us to the LA Institute! It’s great to see a new part of this world, located in sunny LA.

2. So many couples to ship!

In my last post, I talked about the forbidden love between Emma and Jules. But of course it doesn’t just stop there! There are so many amazing couples that you can fall in love with. Some are more complicated than others, but they’ll all make your heart race.

3. Learn more about the Shadowhunter world

Each book gives us another glimpse into this amazing world. Between new runes and histories, the layers of Cassandra Clare’s world become even richer. If you’re like me and want to know everything you can about the Shadowhunters, this book will give you so much more.

4. You can binge the first two books at once

Now that Lord of Shadows is released, it’s an even better time to read this series! You can binge the first two books until your heart is content. But fair warning, you should probably carve a good amount of time out in your schedule because you won’t want to stop reading.

5. It’s a great entry-point into the Shadowhunter world

It’s hard for me to believe, but I know there are people who haven’t had the chance to read a Shadowhunter book yet! If you’re one of them, Lady Midnight is the perfect place to jump on the bandwagon. If you’re someone who prefers to be thrown into the middle of the action without too much preamble, this is the perfect

6. To celebrate 10 years of Shadowhunters

Did you know this year is the 10th anniversary of City of Bones? There’s no better way to celebrate this than reading! The special 10th Anniversary Edition of City of Bones releases on November 7th, but until then you can dive headfirst into Lady Midnight!

If you haven’t read Lady Midnight yet, you should seriously reconsider your life choices because it is so, so amazing. I could ramble on and on about all the reasons you should pick up this book right now, but I don’t know if they’d let me write more posts for Riveted after that. Instead, I’ve put together six top reasons why you should read Lady Midnight ASAP (but if you’d like some more, ask me in the comments)!

1.  A New Shadowhunter Series

I started reading Cassandra Clare’s books when I was in middle school. You would think after ten books, the excitement for the newest installment would start to get old. But that is so NOT the case with the Shadowhunter books. Reading Lady Midnight, I felt the familiar joy I’ve always felt picking up a Shadowhunter book. At this point, I trust Cassandra Clare to deliver stories I will love and Lady Midnight is no exception. If you enjoy being swept up into other worlds full of danger, love, and adventure, look no further than Lady MidnightBut maybe you haven’t read the Mortal Instruments or the Infernal Devices and you haven’t started Lady Midnight because you haven’t gotten to those stories yet. Don’t worry! This might be a companion series, but you can start with Lady Midnight. I promise everything will make sense, and chances are you’ll get so hooked on the world you’ll want to go back and read the others later anyway.

2. Forbidden Love

I’m a sucker for a forbidden love story and no one does it better than Cassandra Clare. There’s just something about the will-they-won’t-they thing that creates so much delicious tension. Emma and Julian are best friends and Parabatai, but the truth of their feelings for one another is not just swoon-worthy, it’s potentially dangerous. Is there a reason why romantic love between Parabatai is forbidden? Or is it just an arbitrary law that was always meant to be broken? This trope couldn’t be more up my alley and Lady Midnight does not disappoint.

3. Glimpses of our Favorite Characters

Have you wondered what our favorite characters from Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices have been up to since their books ended? Did the couple you shipped above everyone else stay together? Are they getting married? Well, one of the reasons why Lady Midnight is such a fun read is because we get to find out! The book starts five years after the end of City of Heavenly Fire, so get ready to see cameos of your favorite characters!

4.  The Shadowhunter World after the Dark War

In addition to seeing our beloved characters five years later, we get to see what has happened to the Shadowhunter world in the wake of the Dark War. Tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at an all-time high, especially after the Seelie Queen sided with Sebastian. Lady Midnight explores the fall out and what happens when people let old prejudices cloud their judgement. Really, the Mortal Instruments was only the beginning.

5. New Characters to Fall in Love with

If you’re still stuck on Jace or Will (jeez, what is it with those Herondales?), or thinking about how much you miss Clary’s fire, look no further! There are SO many characters to fall in love with in this new series. From the strong and protective Julian to the fierce Cristina, and even someone named Perfect Diego, there’s a character for everyone.

6. Lord of Shadows is here

If you’re someone who really enjoys binge reading, then this is the perfect time to read Lady Midnight! The second book in the Dark Artifices series, Lord of Shadows, has already released. So once you’re done with the adventure in Lady Midnight, you can move right on to Lord of Shadows with no wait time! And trust me, Lord of Shadows is ah-mazing. You do NOT want to miss out on this!

1. The Scoobies

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The Scoobies in Buffy the Vampire Slayer is undeniably my favorite friend group. They help Buffy as she fulfills her duties as the Slayer, fighting vampires and demons. Though people come in and out of it, the core three of Buffy, Willow, and Xander remain throughout all seven seasons. P.S. Our upcoming Buffy book series will def have a cool squad, too!

2. Tiny, Lu, Will, and Nathaniel

The Odds of Lightning by Jocelyn Davies

the-odds-of-lightning-9781481440530_hr

This is a group that used to be close but no longer speak to each other. Tiny, Lu, Will and Nathaniel used to be best friends. But things happen the summer before high school that tore them apart. Then, the night before the SATs, the four friends are forced together again during a wild thunderstorm that threatens to shut down New York City.

3. Andi, Palmer, Bri, and Toby

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

Unexpected everything paperback

These four girls have an amazing friendship. I mean, they’re able to pretty successfully communicate with Toby exclusively in emojis. If that’s not friendship I don’t know what is. Like any friend group, they go through a rough patch, but part of what makes this group so awesome is that you know they’ll work out their differences no matter what. They’re a friend group that’s closer to family.

4. Harry, Ron, and Hermione

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

No post about friend groups would be complete without Harry, Hermione, and Ron on the list. They supported each other as they faced both the monotony of classwork and sinister forces. Harry needed friends to fight by his side as he took on Voldemort, and Hermione and Ron were right there in the thick of it.

5. Grayson, Mike, and Ian

Boys of Summer by Jessica Brody

Read the first 16 chapters ofThe Boys of Summer by Jessica Brody!

Grayson, Mike, and Ian have been best friends since childhood, which means tons of memories filled with clambakes, bonfires, and late-night swims in the oceans. and their friendship is definitely something to be admired. As they grow, their friendship is tested in many different ways, especially when life gets tough and friendship rules are broken. But no matter what faces this friend group, it’s clear that at the end of the day, they’re there for each other.

Saints and Misfits has been on my radar since I saw the cover thumbnail on my computer screen ages ago. It drew me in immediately, but I was unprepared for how much this gorgeous cover would blow me away in person! It’s so so beautiful that I felt compelled to let you guys know what I thought about it! Check out 18 thoughts I had while looking at the Saints and Misfits cover. Then go read the extended excerpt available through July 31st.

1. The first things I notice immediately are the colors! This is a gorgeous combination and I’m obsessed with how the yellow fades into pink. It reminds me of a sunset.

2. is such an intriguing name…I wonder what it could be about.

3. The lettering of the title is so nicely done that it looks like it was hand done with a paintbrush.

4. Plus the title is shiny! I LOVE shiny titles.

5. I like the way the girl on the front is ever so slightly in front of the title.

6. It’s great to see a Muslim American girl being represented front and center on this cover…we need more like this!

7. Also, where can I buy those shoes??

8. I wonder what a camera has to do with the plot…

9. Flipping it over, the back is just as gorgeous as the front, plus there’s an excerpt!

10. *Pauses to read excerpt*

11. And now I’m weirdly looking at everyone’s arms.

12. …back to the cover…

13. I love the design work that frames the excerpt.

14. Now looking inside at the front flap, the pink and yellow color scheme continues.

15. And now, there’s a third element thrown in: Monsters.

16. All I can think about now is how badly I want to read this book!

17. I need to dive into it NOW.

18. *is reading*

We’ve all had a broken heart at one time or another. Sometimes it’s because you got out of a long-term relationship while other times it might be because you have a bad case of unrequited love. Whatever the scenario, it’s always handy to have things on hand to cheer you up. I’ve made a list of six movies that never fail to cheer me up when I’m down. Having recently read The Museum of Heartbreak by Meg Leder (which was AWESOME, you should go read it), I definitely think Penelope Marx, the protagonist, would’ve benefitted from this list! Penelope creates her own personal museum after “coming face to face with the devastating, lonely-making, butt-kicking phenomenon known as heartbreak.” It’s available as an extended excerpt until July 31st. Once you’re done reading that, start watching the movies below. You’ll feel better in no time!

1. Legally Blonde

legally blonde
This one is great because it’s only AFTER Elle moves on from Warner that she lives up to her full potential. The way she comes out of a bad breakup and moves on is not only inspiring, it’s so fun to watch. (Side note: If you haven’t yet, you NEED to listen to the soundtrack to Legally Blonde: The Musical)

2. Pride and Prejudice (2005 adaptation)

Pride and prejudice

There is always some debate over which P&P adaptation is the best, but hands down this is the one you want to watch when you’re down in the dumps. This film is gorgeous, from the cinematography to the music, and, of course, the actors. As soon as I put this movie on, I’m always in a better mood.

3. Moana

Moana
I couldn’t get through this list without adding a Disney movie. Not only is Moana amazing all around, it shows you that you can have an awesome adventure without adding any romance in the mix.

4. Love, Rosie

Love rosie
This is a great one to watch if you’re dealing with a case of unrequited love. It shows that sometimes things have to be in both the right place and at the right time to work out.

5. Clueless

clueless
This movie is a hilarious adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. Though Cher tries to play matchmaker, the ultimate moral of this movie is that sometimes you can’t force things. You just have to have the confidence to believe in yourself and never give up, and everything will fall into place. (Additionally, if you’re looking for more of a period version of this story, I recommend the 2009 BBC mini-series)

6. The Princess Diaries 2

princess diaries 2
Okay, this is something that everyone else might not agree on, but this is one of my favorite movies. It’s silly and fun, and includes Julie Andrews mattress surfing (what more could anyone want?). This movie is always guaranteed to bring me out of any funk, and HELLO, it’s such a girl power movie.

Spoiler: Mia doesn’t need a man! She can do it all on her own, and if that isn’t the greatest message of all, I don’t know what is.

There, I bet you’re feeling better already aren’t you!

Three years ago, I got the chance of a lifetime: to spend ten months living in England. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been obsessed with all things English. It started when I first read Harry Potter and only grew as I got older. As a teenager, I watched as much Doctor Who and Skins as I could, trying to get a taste of what it was really like to live in England (minus the aliens in Doctor Who, of course). Studying Abroad for ten months is a long time to be away from home, but I jumped at the chance and it was one of the best times of my life. Still, I found myself longing for some reminders of home. Since Sherlock is a key component of English culture, I found myself turning to retellings such as Lock & Mori, to make me feel at home walking around Baker Street (because no one bats an eye. Returning home after those amazing ten months was hard, but I was able to find a bit of my foreign home in YA books.  But when I returned home, they had the added bonus of reminding me of my time abroad.Needless to say, books set in England are some of my favorites, so I created a list of some of my favorites to share with you!

Check out the list below and if you’re still craving a little bit of England, Lock & Mori is available as a Free Read until July 17th!

Clockwork Angel cover image
Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to.

Lord of Shadows cover image
Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare

A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.
